Valsartan is a common generic component of many blood pressure medications. Since the mid-1990’s it has been taken by millions of Americans each year to reduce high blood pressure, treat heart failure and to alleviate damage from prior heart attacks. Many products containing Valsartan were initially recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2018 for “unexpected impurities that posed a safety concern.” The FDA found that several Valsartan-containing products were tainted with one potential and two probable human carcinogens: cancer-causing substances. It is not yet known how long Valsartan had been contaminated by these carcinogens before the FDA’s discovery.

Cancer and other health conditions possibly linked to exposure include:

  • Esophageal Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Stomach Cancer
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Intestinal Cancer (including colon or rectal cancer)
  • Leukemia
  • Liver Cancer
  • Liver or Kidney Damage
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
