Counterfeit Air Bags Warning

Some U.S. cars and trucks may be unwittingly driving around with counterfeit air bags, officials warned last week. The auto industry is urging drivers who have had their factory-installed air bags replaced to contact the installer to ensure that the new bags are adequate.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said, “Organized criminals are selling dangerous counterfeit and substandard air bags to consumers and suppliers with little to no regard to hazardous health and safety consequences.”

Many of the counterfeit air bags even bear the brand names of major automakers, but in tests they display a range of malfunctions that could pose threats to anyone who has had an air bag replaced in the last 3 years.
